General notes
- Needs general editing, pictures, etc..
- Fault regarding price of autotables, ¥2000, or roughly $2000 .... am currently too lazy to edit/check prices
- Suggestion: rename to Riichi mahjong?
- there's kind of a dispute about what to name it, isn't there? I figured "japanese mahjong" was the most neutral of the two (hence wiki name). Also I think this article should be split up into multiple ones eventually, though, so there is no actual article called "Japanese mahjong" (and it just has a paragraph or two on the Main page explaining what exactly it is instead, with lots of links) --Bps (talk) 03:41, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- I think it's best to stick to "Japanese Mahjong" since that is the name of the wiki and it's rather silly to use different names throughout the wiki. --Osamu (talk) 09:36, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Well, as a general principle of any Wiki, feel free to change things - for the sake of improvement. KyuuAA (Talk:キュウ) 20:40, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
Prevailing wind marker versus dealer position
From this article: (as of 2013-10-09)
This dealer marker is an east-south prevailing-wind marker used in games to indicate the round and the current dealer.
EMA 2012 rules: (from section 2.2 Prevailing wind)
[...]
A wind marker should be placed permanently by the player who begins as East, and when this player becomes East again after the first (east) round of the game, the marker is flipped to indicate the new prevailing wind, south.
-- and -- (from section 2.8 The Deal)
[...]
The dice are placed at East’s right; in this way it is always clear to all players which player is East.
So EMA says (and how we play at LiRMA is) that the prevailing wind marker is placed at the dealer's right hand side in east 1, and stays there throughout the game. It is there to show who was first dealer, so we know when we are to switch to south (i.e. when the dealer once again gets to the position with the wind marker). The current dealer is indicated by placing the dice at the dealers right hand side after breaking the wall.
...So, is the EMA way the norm in this regard? (Otherwise seems to be indicated by the current reading of this article, quoted at the top.) I can write the change to this article, but I'd like some input first, since the current text is quiet contrary to what I would write. 2Flwrs (talk) 09:56, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
- Granted that near 100% of this cruddy writing is my own doing, I'll make this a point. Whether the dealer marker moves around or doesn't, that just depends on who you play with. I can understand the disadvantage of letting the marker move around, sometimes, I've had to ask people: "Hey, who was the first dealer?" But of course, that's only via casual play. With my own little tournament, I take note of the initial wind seating, among other things. EMA aside, I'll have to recommend that we include as much of "everything" as possible. Also, we do have an article here to highlight specific EMA norms. KyuuAA (Talk:キュウ) 20:37, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
- It's just that every live game I've played (and a few computer/console games too, where dealer marker and dice are part of the graphics) we have used the prevailing wind marker as a initial-dealer marker, and the dice as a current-dealer marker. But since you say that the practice of using the prevailing wind marker as current-dealer marker exists, I wouldn't push too hard on changing the text of this article..., perhaps adding a note that both ways exists? At least we should write that both ways exist in the round indicator section of the mahjong equipment article, and make sure that a link there is available somewhere close. (I could write that text in a day or two...) 2Flwrs (talk) 00:16, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
- Just as an other note (don't take it to seriously): In Saki, they keep the wind marker at the initial-dealer position, see for example vol. 5 p. 129–130: In S4 Amae Koromo pons the South, clearly showing the wind marker next to the minkou. On the next page Ikeda Kana thinks "A double south!", so it is evident that Amae Koromo (where the wind marker is) is not dealer. Also, I believe that the current dealer is indicated by an indicator-lamp on the automatic table, but that does not show well in the manga. I don't remember how it is in Akagi, Tetsuya or Koizumi... 2Flwrs (talk) 00:16, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
Terminology
Since the terminology listing is pretty much done (the alphabetic list) at least, this is just a note to include more of those terms (if necessary) into this article. Although, it is a matter of balancing jargon vs layman's terms. It is expected for newbies to read into a article like this; but also, the writing shouldn't be watered down too much.
