The game's setup utilizes all 134 tiles; and each of the four players are responsible for shuffling and building the walls. When divided by 4 (among the 4 players), it comes up to 34 each; and 34 divided by 2 produces 17. With this, each player is responsible for arranging the tiles into a wall of length 17 tiles double stacked. To help expedite the process, it is possible for players to pick up a row of 17 tiles and place it right on top of the other 17 tiles. If that is physically not possible, then a player can simply place tiles on top of a row using smaller increments. Naturally, each player places these walls to accommodate enough player space in front of them. Of course, with [[List of mahjong video games|online play or computer/video games]], the wall building process can be completely ignored. The shuffling and wall building are both automatically done. Likewise, [[automatic tables]] complete this process too. | |||
