Daizo Amano
Daizo Amano (天野大三) (1904–1982) was a pioneer in early riichi mahjong, and the author of multiple defining rulesets of Japanese mahjong.
Founding of the Japan Tile Association
In 1952, Amano wrote the first standardized rules of riichi mahjong and published them in the Hochi Shinbun newspaper. After the publication, someone connected with the Mahjong Association of Japan reported him to the police, but he was ultimately let go. Because of this incident, Amano left his role as the executive director of the association, and founded the Japan Tile Association 「日本牌棋院」 to focus on riichi.
