Usually, a player's hand value decreases in the event of an open hand, but this may not always be the case, especially for some yakuman hands. Japanese mahjong strategy centers on knowing when to appropriately make the above calls. Knowledge of the yaku plays a large part in this decision making process.

The game rounds
Hanchan
The entire game itself involves multiple instances of tile shuffling, dice rolling, and hand building.  It is known as a hanchan.  After the conclusion of one hand, players assess the end of the previous hand and transfer points between each other, as appropriate.  Afterwards, the game repeats the tile shuffing and wall building process to proceed into the next hand.  Each hand is denoted by the current wind round, dealer number, and the number of dealer repeats.  The game proceeds to its conclusion after each player has had the chance to be the dealer twice during the game.  This involves 8 dealer rotations; and these rotations are split into two groups of 4 to compose two different wind rounds: East and South.  For shorter games, everyone is allotted the dealer seat once, to play just a single East round.  For each dealer position, players may extend their dealer position with additional bonus hands.
