Mahjong for Beginners is a group of three simplified rulesets of increasing complexity devised by Reddit and BoardGameGeek user MansterSoft. The three rulesets are called Baby Mahjong, Junior Mahjong and Family Mahjong. They are meant for teaching the game to beginners or younger players. It can also be adapted to 2 or 3 players with MansterSoft's San Hako method.

The full rules can be found here on the San Hako Mahjong website.

Overview

All three variants use a simplified scoring system without fu, and they don't use wind tiles.

Baby Mahjong has a reduced hand size of 11, no tile calls, and only three yaku: menzen tsumo, tanyao and riichi. None of the honor tiles are used.

Junior Mahjong expands to the full hand size of 13. Dragon tiles, pon, chii, dora, and noten penalties are introduced, as well as 7 more basic yaku.

In Family Mahjong, furiten and kan are introduced, as well as all yaku in the full game except for pinfu and any yaku involving winds or kans.
