Mahjong Biography

Cameron Waggoner (Tenhou ID TheWagon) is an amateur mahjong player hailing from Mooresville, North Carolina. He first developed an interest in mahjong back in January 2017 when a friend introduced him to the game. It took him two weeks to get his first valid hand (riichi, pinfu, menzen tsumo, dora 2) and wasn't even aware he had pinfu when he riichi'd. Cameron has been eagerly trying to get his own club started for nearly a year, but has had little luck doing so, and relies on Discord to keep up with the mahjong community. He hopes to one day have a mahjong community of his own and to score a (recognized) paarenchan.

Play Style

One might describe Wagon's play style as "stupidly aggressive". Using only bits and pieces of the tenets of great mahjong players, he often unabashedly pushes his hands regardless of what other players do, and is especially dismissive of double riichi's. Surprisingly, he's gotten more accustomed to dama'ing hands with bad waits in the hopes of building better ones. Having a background in poker, he prioritizes deception where others would likely push for efficiency, and desperately needs to work on his defense. His hand win rate is decidedly average at 21.9%, and has a pretty high deal-in rate of 18.8%. He has coined his reluctance to fold as the "Push and Pray Method".

While Wagon doesn't have many opportunities to imitate his favorite character since he almost exclusively plays online, he really likes the play style of Urabe from Akagi due to his emphasis on player manipulation (because of this you'd think he'd would also take after Urabe's great defense too). He also feels as if he's found a kindred spirit in Pen-Chan, a Fukumoto character that loves mahjong but is very bad at it.
