鳥星雨 plays a slow and methodical, conservative playstyle. He focuses heavily on probability maximization as a key towards winning hands. Therefore, he relies very heavily on ryanmen and sanmenchan waits, which results in him going for the yaku [[Pinfu]] in a plurality of his hands. 鳥星雨 rarely calls tiles, and prefers to keep his hand closed. This is because he greatly values the ability to play defensively if the situation requires it. 鳥星雨 will rarely call Riichi on a poor wait, and will often times sacrifice tenpai to search for a better one, even without a valid yaku in his hand. All of this results in rather slow gameplay, leading to lower hand winrates in general.
#Digital 鳥星雨 has a very digital playstyle, centered entirely on maximizing expected values based on outcome and probability. This factors in various elements, such as the value of your hand, the probability of winning your hand, but also the probability of dealing into an opponent's hand. He likes to see mahjong as a model of game theory, where there are probabilistic outcomes in the wall, and players are playing a set of strategies. While prior beliefs about these strategies can be ascertained by playing the same players consistently, on Tenhou L0, the only way to attain this information is to read discards well. This is the area that 鳥星雨 is looking to improve upon the most.

Instead, 鳥星雨's specialty is defensive play. Like any good defensive player, he properly understands when to fold, and rarely gets hit when doing so. However, his unique ability is to deny opposing players' chances of a comeback by pushing and winning his own hands after an opposing Riichi call. He takes advantage of the fact that a Riichi call locks in a player's waits and denies him any further defensive ability, and also that the call tends to elicit folds from the remaining players. His favorite strategy is to push hands that win off of the Riichi player's genbutsu tiles, picking off points from other players who are attempting to fold. This way, he not only gains points, but crucially denies opportunities for comeback wins.
鳥星雨 likes to watch his favorite professional players and model his playstyle off of them. His favorite pros include 魚谷佑美 (Uotani Yuumi), 二階戸亜紀 (Nikaido Aki), and 茅森早香 (Kayamori Sayaka). In his free time, he looks at videos of professional play, and tries to analyze what they are doing better than him. This is not only entertaining for him, but also provides feedback and teaches him things he did not know beforehand. He does not recommend this method of learning for inexperienced players.

Because of his conservative playstyle, 鳥星雨 tends to dislike playing with beginners in what he defines as "turkey shoot" games. This is when there are 1 or 2 beginners without too much knowledge on defensive tactics and decisions. Such games disproportionately reward fast tenpais and riichi calls, which naturally favor aggressive play. This is embodied in his passionate hatred for the 一般 lobby of Tenhou. Ultimately, he is a player that has more fun losing to skilled players than beating beginners.
Finally, 鳥星雨 firmly opposes playing with beginner players who do not know proper defensive strategies. Games with one or more of these beginner players disproportionately overvalue aggressive play, which 鳥星雨 finds incredibly boring after a while. Instead, 鳥星雨 is often times very happy to play open hand games with these players to teach them proper defensive strategy so that they can play better in real games.

Biography

鳥星雨 (ちょうせいう or とりせいう) is an amateur Riichi Mahjong player who currently administers the Northwestern University Riichi Mahjong (NURM) club, based in Evanston, IL, USA. He founded the club in April 2018, and continues to play a large role in the management of the club, despite his graduation and overseas employment. An alumnus of Northwestern University and Waseda University, 鳥星雨 has connections with both the North American scene and the Japanese scene. He currently resides in Suwon, South Korea.

鳥星雨 plays as 鳥星雨 on Tenhou, where he shares a healthy rivalry with his fellow clubmate and close friend YuukiTheFlash. He is also a former regular club member at Chicago Area Mahjong and Waseda Mahjong Club. He still often plays on Tenhou with members from his former clubs, and runs the NURM weekly Friday night Tenhou meetings, hosted within the club's Discord Server.

鳥星雨 loves watching mahjong more than he does playing it. This leads to him organizing his own tournaments, and watching videos of the pros more than actually playing on Tenhou. However, he does enjoy the game on a casual and competitive level. For 鳥星雨, there is no better place for mahjong than a Shinjuku jansou. The jansou is his house, and the auto table is his bread and butter.

Outside of mahjong, 鳥星雨 is avid fan of the 東方Project series of games, and the 同人 arrangements of its music. He also enjoys reading the 咲-Saki- manga and its derivative works. In his free time, he converses with others using 日本語 or 한국말.

Kokushi scored by houtei ron on a jigoku Hatsu. With a haipai of 8 unique terminal/honor tiles, the initial attempt was a Chanta, but gradually a yakuman became a possibility. Second place kamicha was hit for 32k.
