Tenhou.net ranks players with two separate categories:

  • Rank: Rank points are gained when 1st/2nd, and lost when 4th place. Gaining rank points increases your rank, which are organized into groups called Kyuu 「級」 and Dan 「段」.
  • Rating (R####): An Elo system, this increases when winning and decreases when losing. When playing against higher skill players, more points are gained, and less points are lost.

Ranking system

Rank points

As you gain rank points, your rank increases:

  • Each player starts at Rookie 「新人」.
  • The rank after is 9-kyuu 「9級」. Increasing rank will lower the kyuu number until reaching 1-kyuu 「1級」.
  • The rank after 1-kyuu is 1-dan 「初段」. Increasing rank will increase the dan number until reaching 10-dan 「十段」.
  • The highest rank, after 10-dan, is Tenhoui 「天鳳位」

For every game, points may be awarded or deducted based on game placement: 1st and 2nd receive points, while 4th loses points. The higher the room played, the more points are received for 1st/2nd. The higher the rank, the more points are lost for 4th. Prior to the rank of 2-kyuu, points will not be deducted for 4th place.

Every time a player moves up in rank, the points will be set to that rank's base points 「初期pt」 value. If points fall below zero, then the player drops a rank. If the player attains enough points to meet/surpass the target points 「昇段pt」, then a rank promotion occurs.

R rating

Each player begins with a base rating of 1500. This increases or decreases based on wins or losses, as well as the relative rating of the other players. The change in rating after each game is applied as follows:[1]

Rating_change = Adjustment*(Placement_base+(Average_table_rate - Own_rate)/40)

Placement_base = 30/10/-10/-30 for yonma, 30/0/-30 for sanma.
Adjustment = 1-(Games_played*0.002); if games played < 400, 0.2 if games played >=400

To access the higher two lobbies, both tokujou 「特上」 and houou 「鳳凰 」 also require minimum ratings. For tokujou, a 4-dan 「四段」 may access the lobby with a minimum of 1800. Houou players are required to retain a rating of 2000 or greater at a rank of 7-dan or better 「七段」.

Account sharing policy

Account sharing is prohibited for ranked matches. Any account found to have been shared will be warranted a ban from the ladder system. However, accounts may be shared for use in private lobbies.
