Chombo 「錯和/チョンボ」 is a penalty for severe game rule violations, generally severe enough to restart the current hand. Mistakes that are minor and/or correctable, such as drawing the wrong tile, can be given a dead hand penalty instead.
Application
Chombo penalties are given for major, irreversible changes to the game. For example, say you declare an incorrect ron and reveal your hand. By revealing your hand, the available tile count changes, which affects other players' strategy.
- If you had a triplet of 3-pin, and another player was waiting on 3-pin, then that player knows they are less likely to win.
- Revealing your tiles can make certain other tiles safer.
