Biography
鳥星雨 (ちょうせいう or とりせいう) is an amateur Riichi Mahjong player who currently administers the Northwestern University Riichi Mahjong (NURM) club, based in Evanston, IL, USA. He founded the club in April 2018, and continues to play a large role in the management of the club, despite his graduation and overseas residence. He is an alumnus of Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) and Waseda University (Shinjuku, Tokyo), and he currently attends Yonsei University (Sinchon, Seoul).

鳥星雨 plays as 鳥星雨 on Tenhou, where he shares a healthy rivalry with his fellow clubmate and close friend YuukiTheFlash. He is also a former regular club member at Chicago Area Mahjong and Waseda Mahjong Club. He still often plays on Tenhou with members from his former clubs, and regularly runs Tenhou online tournaments within the NURM's online sphere.

Outside of mahjong, 鳥星雨 is avid fan of the 東方Project series of games, and specifically arrangements of its music. He frequently flies to Japan for travel, and regularly attends Comiket and other conventions. He collects music CDs, in part to satisfy his necessity for lossless audio files. He speaks English, Korean, and Japanese in varying degrees of capability.

Playstyle
鳥星雨 is a completely digital player, playing towards maximizing expected values. His playstyle is rather slow and conservative. He tends not to call as often, as he prefers the flexibility that a closed hand offers. 鳥星雨 likes to keep his defensive options open, even at the cost of a faster hand. For example, he likes to have a safe tile that he can use to push his hand during an ippatsu turn. He does not like winning cheap, open hands - even if it is the best option - and will make fun of anyone who wins using such a hand, including himself.
鳥星雨 likes to watch his favorite professional players and model his strategies off of them. In general, he spends significantly more time watching mahjong than playing it. In his free time, he looks at videos of professional play, and tries to analyze what they are doing differently from him. Some of his favorite female pros include 魚谷侑未 (Uotani Yuumi), 二階戸亜紀 (Nikaido Aki), and 茅森早香 (Kayamori Sayaka), and some of his favorite male pros include 佐々木寿人 (Sasaki Hisato), 金子正輝 (Kaneko Masateru), and 小林剛 (Kobayashi Gou). 鳥星雨 recently has also grown quite fond of the lower-tier leagues that are broadcast on Japanese TV.
When he wants to actually play mahjong, he goes to Sillim Mahjong Cafe semi-consistently as time allows. Online, he plays on Tenhou whenever he feels confident about conquering his ladder anxiety, Majsoul when he doesn't, and in more casual settings (such as on the KTX), he plays on Tengokuhai.
