A shanpon that waits for two number tiles is considered a "bad wait", because it only waits for a maximum of 4 tiles of two tile types (2 tiles/type). Overall, players looking to [[defense|defend]] may fall to a shanpon wait more easily.

Shanpon 「双ポン」 is a wait pattern involving two groups of paired tiles, where either is looking to complete a triplet.

Pattern

Waiting for: or

Fu

A shanpon wait does not generate fu by itself. However, the triplet formed by a shanpon wait is worth fu.

  • A triplet is worth 4 base fu.
  • Fu is doubled if the triplet is composed of honor tiles or terminals.
  • Fu is halved if the triplet is open (if the triplet is completed by ron, it is considered open.)

Usage

A shanpon waiting for two types of number tiles is considered a "bad wait", because it only waits for a maximum of 4 tiles of two tile types (2 tiles/type). Like the other bad waits, shanpon is immune to suji, so it can be used for suji traps.

All else equal, a shanpon wait is considered better than the other basic bad waits (kanchan, penchan, and tanki).

  • During tenpai, shanpon waits for two types of tile, while the others only wait on one type of tile.
  • Before tenpai, a shanpon wait - assuming the pairs are made of number tiles - has more available upgrades into ryanmen. Pairs made of middle number tiles have better chances to upgrade.

However, because there are only 2 available tiles per type, it is easy for the tiles in a shanpon wait to be "used up". One or both types of tile may be incorporated into other players' hands (as either a pair or part of a sequence), thus limiting the wait.

Honor shanpon

Like tanki, shanpon can wait on honor tiles, which may be perceived as safer and are harder to incorporate into a hand. A shanpon waiting on at least 1 honor can be considered a good wait under most circumstances. Exceptions:

  • When honor tiles are dangerous or are unwilling to be discarded (e.g., you and/or an opponent are going for honitsu).
  • When 2+ opponents are in tenpai - since defense isn't a factor, an honor tile wait isn't as strong.

Combinations

Shanpon may combine with other tile waits. Shanpon with ryanmen produces entotsu. This combination may be increased with ryanmenten. Shanpon has the ability to mix with itself. This is only possible with a built-in pattern of iipeikou, plus a fourth numbered pair in the sequence.
