Shanpon 「双ポン」 is a wait pattern involving two groups of paired tiles, where either is looking to complete a triplet.

Pattern

Waiting for: or

Fu

A shanpon wait does not generate fu by itself. However, the triplet formed by a shanpon wait is worth fu.

  • A triplet is worth 4 base fu.
  • Fu is doubled if the completed honor tiles or terminals.
  • Fu is halved if the triplet is open (if the triplet is completed by ron, it is considered open.)

Usage

At most, a shanpon wait looks for 4 tiles of 2 tile types (2 tiles each). The pattern has one main advantage: it is immune to suji. It can also incorporate honor tiles, which may be perceived as safer. Players looking to defend may fall to a shanpon wait fairly easily.

Unlike the other basic "bad waits" (tanki, penchan, kanchan), shanpon waits look for 2 types of tiles. Waiting for 4 tiles of 2 tile types is usually better than 4 tiles of 1 tile type, in case one tile type is eliminated completely. The downside is that a type of tile may be incorporated into other players' hands (as either a pair or part of a sequence).

Combinations

Shanpon may combine with other tile waits. Shanpon with ryanmen produces entotsu. This combination may be increased with ryanmenten. Shanpon has the ability to mix with itself. This is only possible with a built-in pattern of iipeikou, plus a fourth numbered pair in the sequence.
