Tile pattern cases
For this sanshoku doukou there are cases where the yaku is guaranteed and cases where it is not.
Case where sanshoku doukou is guaranteed

Case where sanshoku doukou is not guaranteed

Formation
This yaku is difficult to complete. For each number, there are only 12 tiles of that number, 4 tiles per suit. Sanshoku doukou requires 9 of those 12 tiles, and 3 of each suit, which yields pretty bad odds. In addition, unlike daisangen, there is no compensation if you only end up having 1-2 triplets, so calling to complete triplets is more difficult.

Sanshoku doukou requires three of the four tile groups to be triplets. Thus, it is incompatible with any yaku that requires more than one sequence, including iipeikou, ittsuu, sanshoku doujun, and ryanpeikou. There also isn't enough room for shousangen's two dragon triplets. Finally, pinfu and chiitoitsu forbid triplets.
