The New Modern Rules (新現代ルール), originally known as the Weekly Modern Rules (週刊現代ルール), is a 1971 ruleset created by Daizo Amano.

Equipment and setup

Standard setup procedures apply.

All players start with 45000 points, with a target score of 50000:

  • Two 10000 point sticks
  • Four 5000 point sticks
  • Four 1000 point sticks
  • Ten 100 point sticks

Play

Standard play procedures apply, except for the following rules:

Calling

Kuikae is allowed.

Ankan does not interrupt the turn order.

Riichi

Kan is allowed during riichi if it does not change the hand's wait.

Furiten riichi is not allowed. Furiten riichi tsumo will result in ryuukyoku.

Winning

Double and triple ron is allowed.

Ryuukyoku

An exhaustive draw always results in renchan.

The following abortive draws are used:

  • Kyuushu kyuuhai
  • Suufon renda
  • Suukaikan; a fifth kan allowed to stop suukantsu
  • Suucha riichi

Five or more honba will result in ryanhan shibari.

Sekinin barai

Sekinin barai applies to the following hands:

  • Rinshan kaihou
  • Toukanhou
  • Uupin kaihou
  • Chinroutou tsumo
  • Daisangen tsumo
  • Daisuushii tsumo
  • Tsuuiisou tsumo
  • Suukantsu tsumo

For chinroutou, daisangen, daisuushii and tsuuiisou, the discarder is not liable if the final set called was a kan.

Scoring

Standard scoring rules apply, except for the following rules:

Fu

Open pinfu is 20 fu.

Han

Dora, kandora and uradora are used.

Additionally, a rule of "modern dora" is used:

  • If all copies of a dora tile have been discarded (and not called), a new dora indicator is revealed.
  • This dora indicator also gives new uradora.

Yakuman award

For any of the yakuman hands, an additional payment of 15000 points is given to the winner. If won by tsumo, all other players pay 5000 points. If won by ron, only the discarder pays.
