Sanankou 「三暗刻」 is a yaku obtained when the hand has three concealed triplets (ankou). A concealed kan counts as a concealed triplet. It can be completed with an open or closed hand.
The third triplet may not be completed off another player's discard (ron), as the triplet would not be "concealed". However, the third triplet may be completed by tsumo. Note that sanankou and the related suuankou are the only two yaku that care whether the tile group is closed; all other yaku only check if the hand itself is closed.
Tile pattern cases
1. Case where the yaku is guaranteed:
2. Case where the hand must be won by tsumo:
3. Case where the hand is won by discard.
Note: A tsumo results in the suuankou yakuman.
Formation
This yaku requires three closed triplets, leaving room for one other tile group. Any tile group (except a closed triplet, which results in the more valuable suuankou) can be used.
Suuankou tenpai
A closed tenpai hand with both sanankou and toitoi is tenpai for suuankou.
If the hand has a shanpon wait and wins by discard, the hand is not counted as suuankou, and instead scores sanankou + toitoi. This is because a triplet by ron is considered opened and thus disqualifying suuankou.
Compatibility

Sanankou is incompatible with any yaku requiring more than one sequence, those being pinfu, iipeikou, ittsu, sanshoku doujun, and ryanpeikou. It is also incompatible with chiitoitsu, which requires no mentsu at all.
A natural combination involves toitoi:
- An "all triplet" hand with 1 open group scores sanankou + toitoi if a triplet is completed by tsumo, or if all triplets are complete at tenpai. If a triplet is completed by ron it scores only toitoi.
- A closed "all triplet" hand scores suuankou if a triplet is completed by tsumo, or if all triplets are complete at tenpai. If a triplet is completed by ron it scores sanankou + toitoi.
