San ankou (三暗刻) is a yaku, consisting of three concealed triplets (ankou). In the case of having three triplets, the third one could not be completed with another player's discard, as this would not count as being concealed. However, if it is completed with a tsumo, then the yaku is awarded. Ankan is also counted as a closed tripletThe hand this yaku is awarded to may be open or closed, as long as it meets the coniditionsThis yaku is awarded 2 han.

Sanankou 「三暗刻」 is a standard yaku, obtained when you have three concealed triplets (ankou). A concealed kan counts as a concealed triplet. It can be completed with an open or closed hand.

The third triplet may not be completed off another player's discard (ron), as the triplet would not be "concealed". However, the third triplet may be completed by tsumo. Sanankou and the related suuankou are the only two yaku that care whether the tile group is closed; all other yaku only check if the hand itself is closed.

Tile pattern cases

1. Case where the yaku is guaranteed:

Agari:

2. Case where the hand must be won by tsumo:

Tsumo: or

3. Case where the hand is won by discard.

Ron: or

Note: A tsumo results in the suuankou yakuman.

Formation

This yaku requires three closed triplets, as it is defined as such. This leaves room for one tile call, which can be of any tile group.

Suuankou tenpai

A closed tenpai hand with both sanankou and toitoi is tenpai for suuankou. When this hand wins by discard, then the hand is not counted as suuankou. Instead, it is the combination of sanankou and toitoi. The fourth triplet completed by the discarded tile counts as an "open triplet", rather than a fourth closed one.

Sanankou is incompatible with any yaku requiring more than one sequence, those being pinfu, iipeikou, ittsu, sanshoku, and ryanpeikou. It is also incompatible with chiitoitsu, which requires no mentsu at all.

A natural combination involves toitoi. With one tile call, the hand needs to win by tsumo; otherwise by ron, only toitoi is counted. This premise is a similar case involving suuankou, which counts as yakuman via tsumo, or sanankou if ron.
